In the early 20th Century Pandit Bhawani Dayal felt strongly about the promotion of Hindi and during his visit to places across the length and breadth of South Africa, he established Hindi Paatshalas and Hindi Pracharni Sabhas. In 1917, the Veda Dharma Sabha Pietermaritzburg Sabha sponsored the Second South African Hindi Literary Conference in South Africa. It was only in the middle of the 20th century that an organisation dedicated to promoting the Hindi Language was established.
The APS – Hindi Shiksha Sangh partnership began on 25 April 1948 when Arya Pratinidhi Sabha of South Africa (APS) and the Sanathan Dharma Sabha came together on the invitation of Pandit Nardev Vedalankar to discuss possible solutions to promote the Hindi language in South Africa.
The Hindi Shiksha Sangh was housed at the APS headquarters in Carlisle Street in Durban for about 30 years. The annual Hindi Eistedfodds were held at the Aryan Hall.
Members of APS served on the Sangh, and many were awarded recognition for their service in promoting, funding, and retaining the Hindi language.
Following the establishment of the Sangh, Pt Nardev ji served as its first president up to 1975.
