YUVAK ARYA SAMAJ CLAIRWOOD
Background
The Yuvak Arya Samaj (Y.A.S) Clairwood, was established by the late Mr. R. B. Bhooshun at his residence. His vision was to propagate the Hindi Language, Vedic Religion and Culture. The first office bearers of the Y.A.S were Messrs. H.D Persadh, K. Doorgapersadh, B.G.Teeluk, Bedesi, D.Peters, P.D. Maharaj and Rambally.
In 1935 the Samaj purchased its first property at 144 Cherry Road, Clairwood. After seven years at Mr Bhooshun’s residence, the Y.A.S was moved to its own premises at the above – mentioned address in a two- room wood and iron building.
Although there were other Hindi schools in Clairwood at that time, the School run by the Y.A.S became so popular that a large hall had to be built to accommodate the increase in enrollment. At this point it is important to note that the late Mr. A.R. Ramith and a group of helpers sacrificed every weekend for two years to erect the Hall at no charge.
Under the principal-ship of the late Pt. R.M Singh, in the mid-forties and early fifties the enrollment of the Hindi school peaked to 482, thus making the Y.A.S. the largest Hindi School in South Africa.
The Yuvak Arya Samaj – Educational & Cultural Centre was officially opened on 10 July 2005, which is the current headquarters of the Samaj.
The Hall at the Y.A.S is available for hire for functions e.g: weddings, wedding eves, ceremonies, funerals, and other religious and cultural events, etc.
In keeping with our principles, The Y.A.S, provides meals to school going children for two schools in Clairwood every Friday. Satsang is held on a weekly basis from the inception of the Samaj to date, on a Tuesday evening. The Samaj, also donates grocery hampers to 100 under privileged families in our community, every Diwali.
All are welcomed and are encouraged to join the Samaj for Satsang or partake in our Community Seva Initiatives.
The Yuvak Arya Samaj – Clairwood will always endeavour to promote their aims and objectives: To promote the Hindi language and Vedic Culture and serve its community.
